The
life of a coffee plant begins in the nursery. Seed
has been carefully
selected from a mother plant with good production
and an excellent cup. The seed is dried and planted.
Six weeks later tiny coffee heads begin to pop
out of the soil.
Notice
the first two leaves of the plant and remember
what
they look like. They are quite different from
adult plants which you will see later in the
tour.
Some
14 months later the plants can be transplanted
directly into
the coffee field or cafetal. At this
point they should have a strong root system and
enough foliage to grow and prosper. After
transplanting it will be another 3 years before
it produces fruit.
