Birds of Finca Cristina

The number of bird species that have been observed on Finca Cristina is truly spectacular, and comes to show that we can grow coffee in a way that benefits wildlife. 307 species of birds have been recorded on our 30 acre farm since 1997. From Scaled Antpittas and Buffy-crowned Wood-Partridges to Cerulean Warblers and Scintillant Hummingbirds, they all find a home on our farm. Click here to see our complete bird list.

Migratory Birds

Finca Cristina is a vital wintering ground and stopover site for hundreds of species of migratory birds. This is very important because our farm is located in Costa Rica's Central Valley, a very important migratory route, where most of the habitat has been destroyed. Species such as Cerulean, Canada and Bay-breasted Warblers can be seen during migration as they work their way to and from breeding grounds, stopping on our farm to rest and refuel. Others, such as Golden-winged Warbler and Mourning Warbler spend the winter months feeding on a variety of invertebrates in the coffee bushes and shade trees. During March and April, thousands of Broad-winged Hawks pass over our farm as they migrate north. A large percentage of the birds we see every year on our farm are migrants, which makes us happy and encourages us to continue making our farm a better habitat.

Not only do we produce excellent coffee, we also harbor some of the best bird-watching in the area!

Below you will find a photo gallery of birds we have photographed on our farm.
