Finca Cristina A Healthy Earth Grows Great Coffee!

Birds of Finca Cristina

Blue-crowned Motmot

Not only does a healthy Earth grow great coffee, it also provides a home to a great variety of birds. 272 avian species have been sighted on our farm, of which 87 are migratory. From Scintillant Hummingbirds weighing 2 grams to Broad-winged Hawks which can weigh up to 450 grams, many birds find a place to live year round or a winter territory spend in an area where their habitat is becoming scarcer.

Why are there so many birds on Finca Cristina?

Finca Cristina is a lush oasis amidst a desert of pastures and urban development. The presence of shade trees and coffee creates a structure similar to a forest, with canopy, understory, and ground cover. The absence of pesticides also contributes to an abundance of invertebrates, one of the most important food sources for birds.

87 species of migrants have been observed on Finca Cristina. Our farm is an important stopover or wintering site for migrants.

The farm is also under one of the important raptor migration routes for spring migration, though raptors can also be seen migrating in the fall. More than one thousand Broad-winged Hawks can be seen on a good morning, as well as a good deal of Swainson's, Red-tailed, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks.
