All our coffees are 100% Shade grown, Sun dried Arabica Beans:

  • Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) 1200-1400 m
  • High Grown Atlantic (HGA) 900-1200 m
  • Beneficio Cristina mills and markets coffee for 34 small farmers, providing fair prices for their coffee.

 

 

 

 

Ecological Mill

The mill, or beneficio--first of its kind in Costa Rica--is an integral part of the farm. Designed in 1992 to be part of a closed system with minimal impact on its surroundings and operating on the following principles, our coffee mill was presented the 'Hoja Verde' award from the Ministry of Environment and Energy in 1997.

Water use is minimized.
Coffee pulp (broza) is composted and returned to the field.
Mucilage removed during washing is processed in a biogas system (UASB reactor).
The methane is used for household cooking; the effluent provides a high quality fertilizer.
The coffee is sun dried.
Yields and quality are higher than in conventional, large mills.
